What Is Pallet Truck
A Pallet Truck, also known as a “pallet jack” or a “pallet pump”, is a basic form of forklift often used and best suited to a warehouse environment, for the moving of pallets and palletised loads. They are especially useful for boosting the efficiency of these kinds of manual tasks in warehouse environments, turning a multiple-person job into a one man job.
Benefits of Pallet Truck
Time and Cost-Saving
Pallet trucks offer a cost-effective solution to warehousing and storage operations. With a cheaper initial cost and less ongoing maintenance compared to forklifts, this saves time and money over a significant period of time. Less servicing means less downtime, and the fact that they do not need fuel to run means they are cheaper to operate.
Increased Efficiency
With the ability to transport various weights, this increases productivity levels and efficient operations. As employees can use this equipment instead of handling materials directly themselves, this saves energy and lessens fatigue. Using a pallet truck saves time when loading and unloading and gives workers the ability to tackle tasks that are physically challenging.
Reduced Risk and Injury
Safer and easier heavy lifting can be performed by using pallet trucks, therefore reducing the injuries inflicted on your workers. Although thorough training and health and safety briefs on heavy manual lifting will always be conducted, there will still be risks. If you are moving heavy pallets and materials regularly, pallet trucks are definitely a good investment and they will reduce the costs related to employee injury.
Ease of Use and Versatility
Pallet trucks are smaller than forklifts which means that they can manoeuvre around tight spaces and corners a lot easier. They come in a variety of designs, including different lengths and sizes, making them ideal for most industries. A pallet truck can also transport almost any kind of load up to 1000kgs which makes them versatile and ideal for a wide range of requirements.
Types of Pallet Truck
Manual Hand Pallet Truck
When using a manual pallet jack, workers need to pull these trolleys themselves. These also have levers that workers toggle to put a pallet on the truck. Since they are hand-operated, operators don’t need a special license to use this. They are available in a wide variety of lift capacities and fork lengths, which is why they’re a cost-effective option for small to medium-scale businesses.
Electric Pallet Truck
An electric pallet truck is a motorized tool that is also used to move and lift materials. These usually have controls that allow operators use to load pallets onto the truck. They can also control the prongs of the pallet jack with the controls. Depending on the model, these can also have ride-on feature that makes transportation faster.
Compact Pallet Truck
A compact pallet truck is a pedestrian-powered pallet truck that functions effectively in confined or congested spaces. They are known for being a great type of pallet truck due to their capability of internal transportation, a process of transporting raw materials, or products inside an industrial plant, over short distances. Similar to manual pallet trucks, they’re suitable for small to medium-scale warehouses.
Pallet Truck construction
Each of these parts has a specific function that contributes to the operation and safety of the pallet truck.
Handle
You can grasp the handle at the end of the tow bar with both hands and pull or push the pallet truck in the desired direction.
Hand lever
This lever is set to one of three positions depending on whether you want to lift, lower or move the load.
Tow bar
The tow bar facilitates the control of the pallet truck and creates hydraulic pressure for the lifting function through a pumping motion.
Steering wheels
The free-moving castors enable precise control with the smallest possible turning radius.
Load/fork rollers
Also known as trestle rollers or load wheels, the load rollers at the front end of the forks can only be moved in two directions (forwards and backwards).
Fork arms
The fork arms are driven into the mounting slots of pallets or pallet cages until the load rests completely on the forks.

1.Start by sliding the forks under the gaps of the pallet you wish to move, keeping the handle in an upright position.
2.Before moving, ensure that the pallet and its contents are secured to the pallet truck. If you’re concerned about the load falling during movement, tie the item to the pallet for additional support.
3.Raise the forks until there is a gap between the pallet and the floor.
4.When you’re ready to move, push the handle down and guide the pallet truck in the desired direction. For a firmer grip, coordinate the hand you use to move it with the direction you’re going, switching between your left and right hand as necessary.
5.Remain alert and vigilant, watching for people and objects that could obstruct your path. By maintaining a safe speed, you can help prevent unforeseen accidents.
6.Plan ahead for where you want the pallet to go. When you arrive at the new location, gently lower the forks until the pallet is safely on the ground. At this point, you can remove the forks from beneath the pallet.
Driver Environment: Advancements in operator ergonomics have led to more comfortable working environments, increased visibility, and lower noise levels.
Anti-Vibration Isolators: These components reduce the vibrations and road shocks that travel through the wheels to the truck seat, minimizing operator fatigue and increasing productivity.
“Command” Driving Positions: Manufacturers like Yale design trucks with a “command” driving position to ensure maximum visibility of the load and the operating area, enhancing safety and efficiency.
Weather Protection Kits: Manufacturers have increased their focus on weather protection technology, testing trucks in extreme conditions and temperatures. They also offer optional kits to improve operator comfort in tough conditions, allowing for year-round use in various environments.
Pioneering Technology: Manufacturers are striving to reduce emissions and fuel consumption through various innovations.
Eco-Settings and Load-Sensing Hydraulics: Yale has made significant progress with eco-settings and load-sensing hydraulics that reduce fuel consumption. These advancements lead to improved fuel efficiency and enhanced productivity.
Lithium-Ion Batteries: Manufacturers have placed a focus on lithium-ion batteries to lower emissions. Although initially more expensive, lithium-ion batteries have proven to be more durable than lead-acid options, lasting up to four times longer. This technology reduces the environmental impact of pallet trucks while providing longer run times and faster charging.
Engine Optimization: Manufacturers have made improvements to their engines, resulting in enhanced fuel efficiency, faster engine response, and cleaner, quieter operations with reduced CO2 emissions. These advancements benefit the environment and lead to lower operating costs for businesses.
Although the weight of a pallet truck will depend on the model you choose to use, there’s a distinct difference between the weight of a manual pallet truck and an electric pallet truck. For example, an electric pallet truck could weigh as much as 400kg, where a manual pallet truck could be as light as 70kg.
Moving several pallets each day is made easier by the use of a manual pallet truck, but if you’re constantly moving pallets over a large area, it could be more efficient to use an electric pallet truck. More substantial than a manual pallet truck in both weight and size, electric pallet trucks make it possible to carry heavier, larger items.
Electric pallet trucks have power-assisted lifting, which takes away the need to potentially injure yourself through pushing and pulling like you would with a manual pallet truck. Although they’re likely to be more expensive, they can speed up the time it takes to move masses of pallets without having to buy a forklift truck, making them the ideal accessory for a large warehouse.

Pallet Truck Don’ts
Do not overload
Overloading a pallet jack can causes serious consequences such as overbalance or malfunction. So, what is a pallet trucks safe maximum handling limit?
Most hand pallet trucks have a maximum capacity of 2000-2500kg. Some can even reach up to 5000kg. Thus, always be aware of the maximum handling limit of pallet jacks to ensure that you are will not overload your pallet trucks.
One way to avoid overloading it is to always keep track of your loads’ weights.
Do not use it on ramps
Avoid using pallet pumps on ramps whenever you can. This is because it may be hard to maintain the balance of your jack and load. Even a slight incline or decline can have serious impact on the gravitational force.
Plus, your load may freewheel on its own which causing it to bump into objects or other workers.
If it is absolutely necessary to use it on ramps, be extra careful. Keep the load uphill from you so the load is balanced. On top of that, keep the forks 4 to 6 inches above the ground to prevent them from catching on the ramps.
Do not push, pull
There are two dfferent opinions on whether you should push or pull your pallet jack. For us, we would say pulling is better for the operator.
This is because pulling can increase maneuverability for the operator. You can check the hazards ahead of you such as objects on the ground and other workers.
Pallet Truck Uses
With the variety of different pallet trucks available, there are also a wide range of uses for these trucks, including:
Manual Pallet Trucks
A manual pallet truck, such as this heavy-duty hand pallet truck, is most often used to manually lift and transport loads of up to 2,500 kg and is the standard type of pallet truck.
Electric Pallet Trucks
An electric pallet truck is often used for high-spec applications, taking most of the manual labor out of the task of moving loads.
High-Lift Pallet Trucks
A high-lift pallet truck is designed to lift loads much higher than a standard pallet truck, while also functioning as a lifting table and workbench.
Weigh-Scale Pallet Trucks
Weigh-scale pallet trucks can be used to weigh whatever you’re transporting, up to certain limits, while also providing the efficiency of a regular pallet truck.
Choosing a Pallet Truck: 7 Tips to Lighten the Transport Load!
Carrying Capacity
When choosing a pallet truck, you should first consider its carrying capacity. The capacity must be suitable for the weight of the materials you intend to move. Selecting a pallet truck with a capacity below your load will disrupt the work process and render your low-capacity product ineffective. It is important to choose a load capacity that meets your operational needs. There are pallet truck models with carrying capacities ranging from 1 tonne to 5 tonnes, each with different features.
Operation Type
Pallet trucks are divided into two categories based on the type of operation. Manual pallet trucks rely entirely on the operator's muscle power. These traditional pallet trucks are ideal for warehouse management, offering a practical solution at a low cost. In an era of rapid technological advancement, electric pallet trucks provide speed and efficiency in warehouse management and material handling. Battery-powered pallet trucks stand out for their quiet operation, high maneuverability, and low energy consumption. When considering your pallet truck needs, choose according to the type of operation.
Working Environment
The pallet truck must be suitable for the environment in which it will be used. Uneven floors can prevent safe and balanced transport of the load. Another important factor is narrow corridors; the maneuverability of the pallet truck in such spaces must be high.
Wheel Type
Selecting the appropriate wheel type is crucial based on the surface on which the pallet truck will operate. Polyurethane (red) wheels, with their durable, smooth, and non-marking design, provide easy movement for transporting heavy loads on rough ground. Polyamide (bone) wheel pallet trucks facilitate easier movement on hard surfaces such as epoxy, asphalt, and concrete. Additionally, these wheels are widely used in the chemical and food industries due to their chemical resistance. They do not leave marks on the floor and have a hard structure. Rubber wheel pallet trucks are frequently preferred in retail environments due to their quiet operation. However, rubber wheels can leave marks on wooden and tiled floors, so the floor type should be considered when choosing.
Pallet Type
When selecting a pallet truck, consider the type of pallet you will be using. This can vary based on your warehouse or business's needs for pallet transport. Besides the standard euro pallet, which is the most common, there are also long fork and short fork pallet truck models designed for different industries and work areas. Choose based on your business requirements.
Service and Spare Parts
One important consideration for pallet trucks, which are among the most common lifting equipment, is service and spare parts availability. Choosing a pallet truck from a reliable brand can offer advantages in terms of product durability and performance. In the event of any technical issues or maintenance needs, it is essential to have access to fast and effective support, as well as a reliable stock of quality spare parts.
Price and Budget
Finally, consider your budget. Keep in mind not only the price but also the performance and suitability for your needs.
